Background on International Students From Brunei

Brunei ranks 10th out of the 11 Southeast Asian countries for the number of students receiving a college or university education in the United States.

Brunei has less students enrolled in U.S. higher education than almost all other countries in Southeast Asia including Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. There were approximately 54 students from Brunei enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions during the 2019/2020 school year as reported by the Institute of International Education. Among all Southeast Asian nations, the number of students from Brunei was only more than Timor-Leste/East Timor.

Bruneian Students Studying Abroad in the United States

With a population of close to half a million, an estimated 54 students are currently studying in the United States which accounts for about 0.000114% of the Bruneian population.

The number of students from Brunei enrolled has remained relatively strong despite a significant expansion in higher education opportunities available in Brunei as well as online educational opportunities through higher learning platforms including coursera.com, edx.org, and udemy.com. Universities in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital, are even pulling their own international students from all over West Africa.

There is still one major problem slowing the growth of international students from Brunei receiving a U.S. education and that is the substantial increase in the cost of a U.S. education over the past 20 years. According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. university tuition has increased 500% since 1987. And the number of international students attending U.S. universities skyrocketed 85% from 2005 to 2015.

The average cost of a four-year undergraduate degree from a state college or university in the United States for international students ranges from $22K per year for a public university to $50K for a private university. The tuition for international students is on average three times higher than for U.S. permanent residents (Green Card holders) and citizens at both public and private institutions.

Brunei’s Presence in the Global Economy

Located on the northern coast of the island of Borneo, bordering the South China Sea and Malaysia, Brunei has a tropical climate that is hot, humid, and rainy. With a well-educated, largely English-speaking population of 471,103 (2021), Brunei’s per capital GPD is one of the world’s highest due to excellent infrastructure and substantial income from overseas investment income into domestic hydrocarbon production. Bruneian citizens pay no personal income taxes and are provided free medical services and free education through the university level.

The Best Path to Lower Tuition Costs for International Students from Brunei

With permanent residency (Green Card) status that comes with an EB-5 immigrant visa, international students from Brunei can see the cost of their U.S. education drastically decrease from the international tuition rates to the local “in-state” rates at public universities.

Permanent residency (Green Card) status also provides Bruneian students with much higher admission rates for undergraduate and graduate programs as well as access to select scholarship awards and grants.

Bruneian students should not give up on their dream. No matter what visa you choose to apply for, if your dream is to receive a world-class higher education in the United States, EB5 Affiliate Network has a way to help you achieve your dream.
