Background on International Students From Fiji

Fiji is one of the top Oceanian countries for the number of students receiving a college or university education in the United States.

The number of Fijian students enrolled in U.S. higher education is more than almost all other countries in Oceania including Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Kiribati, and French Polynesia. According to the Institute of International Education, there were approximately 90 students from Fiji enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions during the 2019/2020 school year. Only Australia, New Zealand, and Tonga sent more students to the United States to earn a degree than Fiji.

Fiji’s Presence in the Global Economy

Fiji, a chain of 300 islands in the South Pacific Ocean, has an estimated population of 939,535 (2021). One of the most developed and connected of the Pacific island economies, Fiji’s top resources are forestry, minerals, and fishing. The two largest foreign exchange-earners are its tourism industry, with an estimated 842,884 tourists visiting in 2017, along with remittances from Fijian’s working abroad. Bottled water exports to the United States is Fiji’s largest domestic export. Recent GDP growth has been attributed to increased island-wide urbanization and expansion in the service sector.

Trend of Fijian Students Studying Abroad in the United States

With a population of almost one million, close to 100 students are currently studying in the United States which accounts for about 0.000095% of Fiji’s population.

The number of Fijian students enrolled has remained relatively high despite a significant increase in higher education opportunities available in Fiji as well as online educational opportunities through higher learning platforms including Coursera.com, edx.org, and udemy.com. Universities in the capital city of Suva, located on the island of Viti Levu, are even attracting their own international students from all over Oceania.

One problem negatively impacting the growth of international students from Fiji receiving a U.S. education is the cost of a U.S. education has increased substantially over the past 20 years. According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. university tuition has increased 500% since 1987. And the number of international students attending U.S. universities skyrocketed 85% from 2005 to 2015.

The average cost of a four-year undergraduate degree from a state college or university in the United States ranges from $22 thousand per year for a public university to $50 thousand a year for a private university. Both public and private institutions on average charge three to four times tuition for international students compared to U.S. permanent residents and citizens.

A Simple Path to Lower Tuition Costs for International Students from Fiji

With permanent residency status obtained through an EB-5 immigrant visa, international students from Fiji can see the cost of their U.S. education drastically decrease from the international tuition rates to the local “in-state” rates at public universities.

Permanent residency (Green Card) status also provides Fijian students with substantially higher admission rates for undergraduate and graduate programs as well as access to select scholarship awards and grants.
