The amount of time that can be spent abroad involves several factors, such as the reason for being out of country and the conditional permanent resident’s ties to the U.S. Generally speaking, one should not spend more than 180 continuous days outside the U.S., but if a longer absence is required, the conditional permanent resident should apply for a reentry permit prior to leaving. Reentry will be denied if it is determined that the conditional permanent resident has abandoned his/her U.S. residency.
