How often does a Green Card have to be renewed?

A Green Card expires every 10 years and must be renewed some time before the expiration date. This does not, however, mean that a permanent resident’s status expires. Once a foreign national receives lawful permanent resident status, that status is permanent unless its terms are violated in a way that results in deportation (e.g., certain criminal activity, too much time spent outside the U.S., etc.).
